While there are a lot of good things that are going on at MySpace, there are also a lot of bad things as well. This is also true in the fact that there are a lot of good uses for MySpace and yet there are also a lot of bad uses for it as well. While these thoughts may surprise you, you should know that a lot of people find that MySpace is actually a bad thing.

MySpace is full of narcissistic individuals who are just looking for ways in which to make themselves feel good by gaining “friends.” This is usually done through glorifying parts of themselves online. Most of the time these people do not even care if they are making this up or not. Of course, this is something that is important to do on MySpace because your popularity is judged by how many friends you have or by how many comments you receive. For this reason, these people will often send messages telling you just how cool or sexy they are, which brings up yet another thing that is bad about this social networking web site…

Porn. Yes my friends, there is a lot of porn on this web site. Many MySpace users think absolutely nothing of placing sexy photos of themselves on this web site. In fact, this web site is practically full of “free porn,” which is not good. Even if you are putting up decent pictures of yourself, they can still be used against you.

This web site is also very addictive. Time somehow seems to fly whenever you are browsing through other people’s profiles. Of course, you more than likely have more productive things to do with your
life. However, there are a lot of people who have allowed their addiction to MySpace interfere with their job or school work. While you may say that this will never happen to you, be careful because it just might.

MySpace is also depriving youngsters of their ability to learn how to cope whenever they are alone. This is something that is backed up by reports that have been written by sociologists such as Sherry Turkle. These sociologists say that while these children are alone they are learning that there is always someone there at the other end of end of a computer or phone. This can cause people to need other people just so that they can feel their own feelings. It can also cause people to never want to be alone with themselves and so they will not get to truly know themselves.

Social networking sites have also taught us to openly share our thoughts and feelings with everyone. This is also bad because there is no such thing as a “secret” on MySpace. Instead, everything
is out there in the open and can quite easily be used against you.

It is quite clear that while there are some good things about MySpace, there are some very bad things about it as well. For this reason, you need to monitor your time and use of this web site. Parents also need to keep an eye on their children whenever these children are on MySpace.

If you are new to MySpace, you may be trying to figure out what this social networking site is actually good for. This is especially true if you consider how the Internet as a whole, and MySpace in particular, is misused. For this reason, it may come as a surprise to you whenever you do stumble across intellectual activity taking place on this web site. You may be very happy to find this as you may be looking to have some intellectual conversations online. So, this is just one of the many things that MySpace is good for.

Of course, there are not only intellectuals on MySpace but there are also comedians on there as well. The people who post comedic quips on MySpace tend to stick out. This is probably because of how depressing the world we live in today has become. So, if you are in search of a place where you can find a comedic escape from the world that we live in, go ahead and give MySpace a try.

If you are looking for new friends or even a new relationship, all you have to do is spend some time on MySpace. There is no longer a need to pay for online dating services. All you have to do is spend some time looking around MySpace for people that you would like to get to know. Regardless as to whether you are looking for people who have similar interests as your own or for people who have different interests, which you would like to learn about, there are tons of people gathering on MySpace. For this reason, you will find that your friends list will grow at a rapid pace.

For those of you who are really into music, MySpace Music is a wonderful feature. There you can learn information about your favorite band while listening to their music. You can also find a lot of new bands that you like. This is because those bands that are waiting to be discovered find MySpace to be a great promotional tool for them.

There is also something that is rather addictive about MySpace and that is the profile feature. You really could quite easily spend a great deal of time on this social networking web site. During this time you may want to upload your photos to show off to your friends. Another thing that you can spend a lot of time doing is playing with the backgrounds and layouts of your profile. This really is something that you could change on a daily basis, if you really wanted to since there are tons of great graphics and other “toys” available for you to put up.

Simply put, MySpace really does have a lot to offer and this is why people enjoy this web site. It has a lot of great things that it can offer you. However, there is also a pull towards MySpace that will keep you there for long periods of time during which you should be busy doing other things. Yet that is something that should be addressed in another article. So, go ahead, go enjoy spending time on MySpace, getting to know people and just simply having fun.

It is undeniable that social videos are becoming more and more popular with each and every passing day. To date, MySpace alone has 65,000 video clips with millions more being added each day. In the future, it is believed that videos from the Internet will end up on your television set and even be used as a new type of resume.

It is important to understand that optimizing videos for social networking sites in not the same thing as optimizing these videos for the Search Engines. This is because when you are creating social networking videos you will want to make them both enjoyable and educational. These are the videos that people will like enough to bookmark and share with their friends.

It really should come as now surprise that funny videos are the ones that are the most popular today. Thankfully, children and pets provide us with lots of opportunities to capture funny moments on our video cameras. Another type of video that is in really high demand are “how to” videos. These have been created on numerous topics. In fact, if you think of something that you could explain to someone how to do, then you can be pretty sure that there is a video on this topic available. This is because there are a lot of people today who want to do things for themselves instead of paying for someone else to do it for them.

Many of these videos are well enhanced because there are a lot of video editing web sites available, such as Cuts.com . These web sites help to create very nicely done videos. They also help you as a viewer be able to relate to the person who has created the video.

If you would like to view some of the many great videos that can be found on MySpace.com all you have to do is do a search for the topic that you would like to see a video about. You will surely find that there are a lot of videos on your topic for you to choose from. All you have to do is choose the one that seems like it interests you the most. Then simply sit back, watch and enjoy the video. If for some reason you start the video and then discover that it does not really interest you, then you can choose to close it down and go look for another video to enjoy.

It is a good idea that once you find a couple of videos by someone whom you enjoy to bookmark this person or add them to your “friends” list. This way you will be able to find a lot more videos by this person whenever you want to view them. While you may think that people would only make an occasional video, there are some people who enjoy making videos so much that they actually spend a great amount of time making numerous videos for you to enjoy.

Today there are not a lot of people who have not been on MySpace or MySpace music yet. This is because MySpace is one of the fastest growing social networking sites online. In fact, there are more than 50 million members on this web site and more members are joining each and every day.

One of MySpace’s most prominent features is its music. This feature is part of a growing trend towards using the Internet to introduce new bands and artists in an unbiased way, which is open to everyone. Since most record labels are only concerned with promoting their own artists this is very important. While this makes good business sense, there are hundreds of thousands of musicians waiting to be noticed. That is where MySpace comes in. MySpace provides these bands and musicians a way in which to get their music out there so that it will be noticed.

So, what kinds of music is available on MySpace? Basically, any type of music you can imagine, MySpace has. This is because it is so easy for artists to upload their songs to MySpace. All they have to do is sign up for a free MySpace membership. Then they will need to register themselves as as either an artist or a band. Once their registration is approved they will then receive all of the information that they need in order to learn how to start uploading their music onto MySpace. Of course, they will also be able to create a profile page for themselves, just like the pages that all other MySpace users have. On this page they can put information, pictures, concert dates and information about the new music that they and their band will be releasing.

If you are not a band or musician, you can still enjoy the pages that these bands and musicians create. These pages can be easily found by using MySpace search. Once you find an artist or band that is of interest to you, then you can easily learn all about them. You can also find out where and when they will be playing. Plus you can lister to their great, old songs as well as their exclusive new releases.

Of course, as you can imagine, this is one of the most popular parts of MySpace. This is more than likely due to the fact that MTV and VH1 are no longer catering to the musical needs of the younger generation. These television channels are not providing enough information about bands and musicians anymore either.

Another reason why this is a popular MySpace feature is because there are a lot of very talented bands and musicians that are not making it onto the radio today. This is not because these bands and musicians are not any good but because they simply are undiscovered by labels who are too busy to notice them. While this is quite unfortunate, it is fortunate that MySpace has given them a free place in which they can showcase their great talents.

MySpace is a vibrant online community. It really does have a lot to offer to its great many users. However, you may find yourself wondering just how safe this social networking community is. Of course, since this is an online web site, you do have some right to worry about your own personal safety while visiting MySpace. Here are some things that you should know about since it was at these times that your safety on MySpace was compromised:

  1. In October of 2005 a user by the name of “Samy” exploited MySpace’s site design. He then went on to create the computer world’s very first XSS bug, which he then launched on MySpace.
  2. MSNBC has done some research and have thus concluded that the reason why spyware is on the rise on the Internet is because of MySpace.
  3. Phishers have found a way in which to place HTML on their MySpace page so that what are really their phishing attempts look as though they have come from MySpace. They do this in order to try to lend some false validity to their phishing attempts in much the same way that they also use PayPal and eBay.
  4. In December of 2006 phishers took things a step further and actually began to insert a java script code into videos that they would then upload onto MySpace. Visitors who selected to watch these videos would then undergo this phishing attack. Herein these people would then be asked to give personal information to what looked to have been MySpace but really it was not.

If you are a parent, then there are some additional risks of MySpace that you need to be aware of. Just like anywhere else on the Internet, it is possible for child predators to be lurking around. Unfortunately, social networking web sites have made it even easier for these predators, as well as for stalkers, to commit their online crimes.

Of course, MySpace has done their best to create a safe environment for all of its users to enjoy. Some of the things that MySpace has done to try to protect the children who are using this social networking community include:

  1. The minimal age that a child can be if they want to create a MySpace account is 14-years-old.
  2. MySpace automatically sets all accounts that are created by 14 and 15-year-old children to private.
  3. Children who are between 16 and 18-years-old are able to select any information that they want on their account and set it to private.
  4. MySpace prohibits adults from adding anyone who is between the ages of 14 and 15-years old to their friends list unless the adult knows the child’s full name or email address.
  5. Unfortunately, many of these rules in regard to childhood safety on MySpace were not implemented until January of 2007. There have been some court cases wherein parents have attempted to sue MySpace for not keeping their child safe. Most court officials seem to believe that children’s safety is in the hands of the parents, NOT MySpace.

MySpace has managed to set up a wonderful virtual community that has a lot of great features. These features include:

1. Bulletins. These are posts that are made on a “bulletin board” for all of your MySpace friends to see. These can be useful for notifying anyone on your friends list about something without having to individually message everyone. These can be used for sharing chain letters, advertising and unfortunately they are also sometimes used for phishing, which are attempts to steal your personal information to use for the phisher’s own purposes. Ten days after having posted a bulletin it will be deleted.

2. Groups. This feature is similar to online forums and message boards. They can be created by anyone on MySpace who wants to be a “moderator,” which simply means that this person owns the group. As such, they can add and delete both users as well as posts.

3. MySpace IM (Instant Messenger). This is an instant messenger, which is similar to the messengers that Yahoo, ICQ and MSN have. Your MySpace messenger uses your MySpace name to alert you of new messages and friend requests that require your attention, as well as comments that are posted for you to view.

4. MySpace Mobile. This is a mobile phone feature that allows you to edit your profile, communicate with other MySpace users and add friends to your MySpace account. Unfortunately, this service is not available on all mobile phones.

5. MySpace News. This feature was just launched in April of 2007. It allows you to view news from RSS feeds that you have subscribed to. Users can also vote for news stories so that these stories will be listed closer to the top of the page.

6. Photos. You can post up to 300 photos on your profile.

7. Music. There are thousands of songs that you can choose from for on your profile. Unfortunately this feature is a bit flawed in that music by top name artists is often removed from profiles within just a few days.

8. Profiles. MySpace allows you to do a lot of customization to your profile.

9. Customization. If you know a little HTML, you can do whatever you want with your MySpace pages.

10. Videos. You can upload your own video, which will then be played in flash player. These videos can be embedded into your profile.

11. Relationships. On MySpace there seems to be some sort of contest going on to see who can get the most friends. Unfortunately for this reason not everyone that is listed in your friends list is actually your friend.

12. Groups. While there are plenty of groups available, they are not very prominent. They are also not used very well for conveying information as there is a lot of spam on them.

13. Adding Friends. Adding new friends and accepting friends requests is done with just a click of your mouse. However, you cannot add a large amount of friends at one time.

14. Classifieds. If you are looking to sell something, find business partners or even purchase something, these classifieds work well.

MySpace is the largest online social networking community online today. This is the place where everyone seems to gather together. There really are a lot of things that you can do at MySpace and this is what makes the community such an attractive place to be. In fact, a lot of online friendships and romances have began at MySpace. Plus there are a lot of blogs that are hosted on MySpace as well. However, these are not the only uses for MySpace.

There are a lot of people today who are working from home, either full or part-time. These people are often looking for free and easy ways in which to advertise their business. At MySpace this can be done with the click of a button. There are a wide variety of tools that can be used here, such as sending bulletins and messages or posting comments. There are even “specialized” tools such as the official “MySpace friend finder.” With all of these tools available for you to use it is easier than you may think to make money on MySpace.

A lot of bands and musicians who are using MySpace as a platform to distribute their music and to hopefully become well known artists. This is easy for them to do because MySpace allows them to not only set up a page with facts and information about them but to also upload their music for people on MySpace to listen to. Plus if you decide that you want to go to one of these artists’ concerts you will also find information about their tour dates on MySpace as well.

These are not the only artists that you will find on MySpace though. There are also a lot of people who enjoy dabbling in online film making on MySpace as well. These people make anything from funny videos of their children and pets to “how to” do anything you can imagine videos. It is very easy to upload these to MySpace for other people to enjoy. By doing this, many of these film makers are truly hoping that someone will take notice of them and give them a job.

Another form of networking on MySpace is taking place between writers who wish to have professional careers as writers. There are a lot of forums on MySpace wherein these writers gather to discuss jobs, articles that they have written and anything else that has to do with a writer’s life.

So, as you can see, there really are a lot great networking opportunities that you can take part in at MySpace. Of course, you still need to be careful whenever you are on MySpace because there, just like anywhere else on the Internet, you are still going to find ads for sex. These people who are peddling smut on MySpace are setting up free MySpace accounts wherein they manage to “fly under the radar” as they go about selling sex. They are using the forums, blogs and classified ads as well as asking to be added to your friends list. Therefore, you have to be very careful online, even while you are on MySpace.

There is a great deal of controversy taking place in regards to MySpace’s corporate history. This all began in September of 2006 when journalism student, Trent Lapinski, wrote a lengthy article that was entitled, “MySpace: The Business Of Spam 2.0.” Lapinski’s article was published on the Silicon Valley gossip blog, which is owned by Gawker Media. The name of this blog is the “ValleyWag.”

This article recounted a detailed corporate history of MySpace. Herein it was alleged that this social networking site was originally designed to spam its rival, Friendster. Lapinski then went on to say that MySpace gained its popularity through an intensive spam email campaign instead of by word of mouth like the owners of MySpace claim. The article also alleged that Tom Anderson was originally hired as a copy editor and his title as “founder” was nothing more than an elaborate public relations scheme. Unfortunately, News Corp, the owner of MySpace did not comment upon any of these allegations.

Two months after Lapinski’s article was released, Brad Greenspan, who claims to be the real founder of MySpace, launched his own report. This occurred in October of 2006 and it was called “The MySpace Report.” In this report, Greenspan asked the Securities and Exchange Commission, The United States Department of Justice and the United States Senate Committee On Finance to investigate the acquisition of MySpace. He called this “one of the largest merger and acquisition scandals in United States’ history.”

One of the main allegations in Greenspan’s report was that News Corp should have valued MySpace at $20 billion instead of $327 million. This means that MySpace’s share holders were defrauded by this unfair deal. Financial commentators viewed this report with mixed emotions. Greenspan also stated that the MySpace program code was created by Toan Nguyen. A judge later dismissed a lawsuit that was based upon this report.

It is interesting to note that in November of 2006 CensorSpace.com, which is a blog that was founded by Greenspan, listed Lapinski as a staff member. This blog focuses on what Greenspan and Lapinski call “excessive censorship.” They not only list MySpace as one of the places where this is happening but they list other web sites that exist on the Internet today as well. Some people have suggested that there is some sort of scandal going on since these 2 people are working together. However, only time will tell.

As you can well imagine this whole ordeal was quite newsworthy. Not only was this the talk of the Internet while it was happening, but it also made the news in the “real” world as well. As you can well imagine, a lot of people had their own opinion on all of this as well. However, the aforementioned facts will clearly tell you what actually happened so that you will no longer have to wade through things that may not be true in order to understand these events.

Before MySpace was ever the social network that we know it as we know it today it was an online storage and file sharing company. This domain was originally registered in 1988. People were then able to go to this website and register, for free, to receive a small amount of disk quota. This disk quota would then slowly increase as the user referred new members to this service. Unfortunately, not a lot of people responded to this service and thus the web site began to lose money. For these reasons, the web site sold all of its user information and ceased to operate as of 2001.

Two years later, in July of 2003, the MySpace service, as we know it today, was founded by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe. It is important to understand who each of these men are, in order to understand all of the changes, both good and bad, that MySpace has undergone throughout the years.

First of all, Tom Anderson was born on October 13, 1975. He attended the University of California, Berkeley from where he graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor of Arts in Rhetoric and English. From there he went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, graduating from there with a master’s degree in film. He helped to set up the first pages on MySpace and today Tom is still the President of MySpace. Anytime you create a new MySpace account, Tom will be included as one of your “friends” by default. For this reason he has come to be known as the face of MySpace.

Secondly, Chris DeWolfe graduated from the University of Southern California. His was the sixth MySpace account to be created and he is still the CEO of MySpace.

There was also a small group of programmers involved here with the creation of MySpace as we now know it. The domain itself was partially owned by Intermix Media at that time as well. Intermix Media is a Los Angeles-based Internet marketing company. In 2005 this company was purchased by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation (the parent company of Fox Broadcasting and other media enterprises) for US$580 million. All Intermix web sites, along with web sites from all Fox divisions, became part of News Corp.’s newly formed Fox Interactive Media.

Yet another buy out took place in July of 2005 when News Media Corporation paid $580 million for it. News Media Corporation is owned by Rupert Murdoch. It is the parent company of media enterprises, such as Fox Broadcasting.

A little less than a year after purchasing MySpace, Fox decided to launch a United Kingdom version of MySpace. This was a decision that was made in January 2006 when Fox realized that this would be a great way for them to tap into the United Kingdom music scene, just like they have done in the United States.

It is interesting to note that the former CEO of Intermix Media, Richard Rosenblatt, purchased back all of Intermix’s assets in 2006. These were assets that had been sold to NewsCorp but did not have anything to do with MySpace.
